In preparation for supporting Range-Oars Row in the 2025 Pacific Challenge, we took our eyewear through an intensive testing process at the National Institute for Aviation Research (NIAR) in Wichita, Kansas.
The Ultimate Test: The Salt Fog Machine
One of the most critical tests our eyewear underwent was the Salt Fog Test. This test is designed to simulate the corrosive effects of a marine environment, replicating the harsh conditions the team will face during their journey across the Pacific Ocean. The Salt Fog Test subjects the eyewear to a continuous saline mist, mimicking exposure to saltwater and humid air.
Why the Salt Fog Test?
The salt fog environment is one of the most challenging for any material, particularly for metals and coatings. By exposing our METL Optix eyewear to these conditions, we ensure that every pair can resist corrosion, maintain structural integrity, and continue to perform optimally even after prolonged exposure to saltwater.
